The Longest Shortest Time Mamas Facebook group managed to defy the odds for almost two years before its membership increased to over 18,000 members. That’s when the problems started. And just last week, the group owner, Hilary Frank, surprised group members by shutting down the entire enterprise.
It wasn’t the “mommy wars” though that did the group in; it was racism and sexism. “In its rise and fall,” writes Tara Culp-Ressler, the “Longest Shortest Time Mamas was a reminder of how hard it is to find smart, nontoxic parenting communities online, and how crucial it is that those communities exist.”
