Five people are dead after an apparent murder-suicide near Belfair, Washington. Police are hoping a 12-year-old girl who escaped the carnage will help them to understand why this happened.

The potential victims are believed to be the shooter’s wife, his two children and another unrelated individual, as well as the shooter who later killed himself after an hours-long standoff with police.

Authorities negotiated for about three hours on Friday before a SWAT team entered the house in a secluded, wooded area and found the bodies.

This is the fourth shooting reported in the U.S. in less than two weeks, following shootings in Arizona, Kansas and Michigan.
