Conrad Roy and Michelle Carter met in 2011 and began a very “modern teenage romance.” As far as Roy’s family knows, the two teenagers met in person only a couple of times. Instead, they built their relationship while texting, sending one another literally thousands of messages. The relationship ended three years later, writes Marin Cogan, “in 2014 with Roy’s suicide and an involuntary-manslaughter charge against Carter for making him do it.”

Carter was eventually indicted as a youthful offender that made portions of her court record available to the public, where the outrage at her hand in his death was overwhelming.
