The Supreme Court is set to hear Whole Women’s Health v Hellerstedt today.  Whole Women’s Health has challenged the Texas law that requires doctors who are performing abortions to have the ability to admit patients to a hospital within 30 miles of the abortion clinic and the requirement that abortion clinics have to have the kind of equipment that an emergency room has.  Both requirements were passed supposedly by the Texas legislature to protect women.  Neither does that.  Abortions are a very safe procedure with a very very low complication rate. What the law has effectively down is closed clinics because they can’t meet the requirements making it harder for women to get an abortion especially those without the means to travel long distances.

The lower court ruled in favor of the requirements.
