D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Chief Judge Merrick B. Garland is President Obama’s pick to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court just as the court is in the midst of deciding the most important abortion rights case in more than a decade.

Senate Republicans insist they will not even consider a replacement for Scalia until after the election in November despite the fact that Garland—who was first appointed to the United States Court of Appeals in April 1997— has a reputation as a moderate and was confirmed with the help of seven current Republican senators who approved his nomination back then, reports the Washington Post.
