The artist Samantha Hahn captures the experience of motherhood in all its permutations in her new book, A Mother Is a Story: A Celebration of Motherhood. with a series of ethereal watercolor illustrations paired with quotes on motherhood by the likes of Maya Angelou.
Perhaps every more provocative are Hahn’s comments in the book’s introduction. “Becoming a mother gives you insight into the mind of your own mother, it allows you to see from her perspective for the first time and deepens the bond you share.”
But Hahn, writes Catie L’Heureux, is no Pollyanna, choosing to explore and present the experience of mothering in all its “messy beauty.”
