I am the mother of two black girls. I am white. I know that my life of privilege will never allow me to truly understand what they are facing and what they will face as they move through their lives. They are seven and nine years of age. My husband and I, and our families, will influence and guide them. We will do our best to educate and protect them, but I know it won’t be enough.

Melissa Harris-Perry asks, “What took so long?” I second that sentiment and have another question, “What will it take to matter?”
