This week, dozens of alleged mafia bigwigs and syndicate members were charged for their alleged roles in a long-running racketeering conspiracy.

Thirty-nine suspects from New England to South Florida, including the cities of Miami, Florida, Springfield, Massachusetts and New Haven, Connecticut, were scooped up in a far-reaching federal investigation, reports Tess Owen, ranging in age from 24 to 74.

“The indictment, which was unsealed this week,” says Owen, “reads like the script of Goodfellas or any other mafia classic, ‘where extortion, illegal gambling, arson and threats to whack someone are carried out along with some modern-day crimes of credit card skimming,’ according to a statement put out by the FBI.

Members from several crime families formed an unusual alliance to intimidate, coerce and extort innocent individuals and carry on their illegal enterprises.
