College life has long been seen as a prelude to becoming a full-fledged adult, a time to practice being on one’s own while enjoying the safety that colleges and universities provide. Now, in states that allow people to carry guns on campus, that safety, that protection that many of us felt when we navigated through our college days, is gone. Students, especially LGBTQ students, are afraid. At the University of Houston, where students and staff are allowed to carry guns, they no longer enjoy what many of us took for granted.
