People across wide regions of the United States were unable to access major websites, including Twitter, Netflix, Spotify,, Reddit, Etsy, and The New York Times, says Nicole Perlroth, after hackers used what seem to be routine device connected to the internet to attack a company that reroutes internet traffic.

Hacker apparently used these devices to flood Dyn’s servers with traffic just after 7 a.m. on Friday, then again at 11:52 a.m. writes Perlroth, and again at 5 p.m.’

“It is too early to determine who was behind Friday’s attacks,” says Perlroth, “but it is this type of attack that has election officials concerned. They are worried that an attack could keep citizens from submitting votes.”
