Part of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is being bleached.  The bleaching occurs when the water gets too hot, and the coral expel the algae that lives within. Once bleaching occurs, coral is more likely to die. The Australian government has raised its bleaching alert level and will continue to monitor what is happening. Environmentalists are calling for more stringent measures to control emissions, hoping to stop a new coal mining effort that was approved last October and is set to be built in Queensland in the near future.
