Why are women’s pockets so controversial? And what role does technology play?
Pockets have been a fashion favorite since the 17th century, considered sensible, secret and sexy by society for the past 400 years. So what’s all the fuss. Turns out, women’s clothing didn’t really have internal pockets for most of history because they were so incredibly difficult to access: you know, under the the petticoats, under-petticoats and shifts women were required to wear beneath their gowns.
But then, that’s how the purse was born. Women switched to carrying minuscule bags, called reticules, in their hands rather than relying on their makeshift pockets, dangling from a belt beneath.
