Brown’s taught at UT–Austin for nine years and conducted award-winning research on race and schooling. Brown says she focuses so much of her attention on teaching because she cares so deeply about giving all her students a chance to flourish. Students, she says, require a safe environment before they can talk about “important, often contentious issues, including race, social class, gender, and sexuality.”

Now, imagine, she says, Professor Brown walking into class on the first day of school, dropping her bag on the desk and the bag opening up: inside a gun, for all the class to see.
